SupermarketCALMAC’s ICEBANK® tanks can provide supermarkets with energy savings of 40 percent or more due to a reduction in the number of compressors needed and minimizing on-peak operating time. CALMAC can also reduce the annual amount of system refrigerant lost each year, which will provide building owners with additional cost savings.

The following quotes were taken from the May 2001 issue of HPAC Engineering:

"Despite improvements in recent years, low- and medium-temperature supermarket refrigeration is an expensive and inefficient process. With refrigerant losses averaging 25 percent annually and peak-time energy use charges representing more than half of all supermarket electrical-use costs, alternative solutions are clearly needed.

Through the use of thermal-energy storage, supermarkets can drastically reduce refrigerant losses and lower energy costs by 'banking' energy during off-peak hours (Off-Peak Cooling). When used for air conditioning, refrigerant sub-cooling, or condensing, thermal-energy storage can provide significant benefits.

According to CALMAC Manufacturing president Mark MacCracken: 'When stored cooling is used to sub-cool the refrigerant condensed by the low-temperature compressors, each BTU of stored cooling provides an equal increase in the refrigeration effect of the condensed refrigerant. For equal mass flows, a compressor will have added capacity, requiring fewer compressors or less operating time.'

This approach produces energy and demand benefits. For lower-temperature systems, in which the refrigerant expands to higher vapor fractions, the increase can be substantial. If R-502 is expanded to -26°F from a sub-cooled temperature of about 45°F instead of 100°F saturated, its refrigeration effect will be increased by over 40 percent, assuming a saturated vapor at the evaporator exit. If the non-assisted sub-cooling brings the refrigerant to 85°F, the improvement still will be in excess of 25 percent" (HPAC Engineering, May 2001).
