First Place-ASHRAE Award of Engineering Excellence.
Designers originally estimated that the thermal-storage system installed in the Whitehall Elementary School would reduce electrical energy costs by approximately 15 percent to 20 percent over a conventional system. However, results have far exceeded expectations. Paul V. Fly school, a similar-size school, has energy costs 35 percent higher than Whitehall even though it is used only 2/3 of the time. First cost for the partial-storage system was $192,000 less than conventional installation, resulting in immediate savings.
